This season's collection is named to honor the national flower of Palestine, the Faqqu'a Iris. One of over 3,000 Palestinian flower species, the Faqq’ua Iris سوسن فقوعة or Palestine Iris (Iris haynei) is considered Palestine's national flower since 2016.
This Iris grows on the hillsides of Palestine, specifically in and around the village of Faqqu'a in the Governorate of Jenin, and is one of the rarest in the world. Faqqu'a Irises thrive in the special climate of the Faqqu'a mountains and the flower adorns national medals, stamps and emblems. It is celebrated by Palestinians during springtime when the flower blooms and is an important part of Palestinian identity.
The Faqqu'a Iris is categorized as an extremely vulnerable species with high possibility of extinction- in danger because of the activities of the Jewish National Fund and other Zionist Entity destruction.
Many populations of Faqqu'a Irises have died due to the Zionist Entity's illegal Apartheid Wall's disruption of habitat as well as Jewish Nation Fund (JNF) colonial invasive plantings. JNF activities include destroying native vegetation with fire and planting invasive species such as Pine and Eucalyptus in their place. These trees increase soil acidity and deplete soil nutrients, making it difficult for anything else to grow among them.
Palestinians and Palestinian organizations are committed to the ecological preservation of the Faqqu'a Iris, working to protect its natural environment and national heritage from theft and destruction. As Palestinians fight for the right to live and steward their sacred lands, the Faqqu'a Iris is both a symbol and an imperative to preserve the delicate interdependence of the human, plant and animal life of Palestine.
