Responding to California Wildfires
The fires that have ravaged California this month have brought an incredible loss of human life and homes, damage to plants, animals and habitat, and serious health hazards to everyone in the region. Though very lucky to be spared from fire, my health and the production season of Narrow Bridge Candles have been impacted by threat of fire, evacuation, and dangerous air. I am taking good care and praying for the safety and healing of everyone impacted, and will be offering herbal medicine donations to folks in this area.

Embracing the Luminous Dark and the Great Hanukkah Candle Debate

Rayna on Hanukkah

Last year, I observed the ritual lighting by my teacher Taya. In honor of embracing the Luminous Dark, instead of adding one candle every night of Hanukkah, she starts with all 8 lit, and each night decreases the candles one by one. In this way, the holiday holds deep reverence for darkness.

Turtle Island to Palestine,
Land and Water Protectors Resist Settler Colonialism!

Narrow Bridge Candles is a Jewish Ritual Candlemaking Project in support of the full Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions of Israel. From it's beginning, a portion of Narrow Bridge Candle sales have gone to support the Campaign to Stop the Jewish National Fund (JNF), whose role in the initial and ongoing colonization of Palestine is both integral and violent.

Christian Hegemony and the Calendar

Art from the cover of  "5777: A Year of Radical Dreaming" by JB Brager (jbragerart.com)

What does it mean to live in two calendars? Can celebrating Rosh Hashanah,

the Jewish New Year, be an act of resisting Christian Hegemony?

Rosh Hashanah Rituals
Every year for Rosh Hashanah I take time to reflect on the past year and vision for the coming year. I get out all my craft supplies and make a seasonal wheel of the year, reviewing my relationship to the different seasons, elements and moons.
